There is something about Granny Chic that I find really hard to resist. Pretty florals, wicker baskets, embroidered linens, old china, bows, cozy craft rooms and all those little details that look as though they have been collected and loved over many years.

I’m not sure I’d describe my own home as Granny Chic, but I do love those vintage details, especially when they are given a fresher, more modern feel. That’s probably why I’ve enjoyed designing this collection so much.

Granny Chic is closely connected to the Grandmillennial aesthetic, which has been having a bit of a moment lately. And, of course, it was always going to find its way into my junk journaling!

I’ve put together a whole Granny Chic junk journaling collection for The Lost Paperie, with a pocket-style folio, journaling word strips and fussy cuts, plus two volumes of printable junk journal pages. They are all designed to work together, but you can also use each piece on its own.

I’ve really enjoyed using these printables because they make me want to sit down with a cup of tea and just play with paper for a while. No particular goal, no need to make a perfect journal. Just cutting, layering, tucking things into pockets and deciding where a little basket of flowers or a word strip might look nice.

That, for me, is one of the best things about creative journaling.

What is Granny Chic?

If you’re not familiar with the term, Granny Chic is an aesthetic inspired by the things you might find in a much-loved traditional home. Think floral fabrics, chintz, embroidery, crochet, wicker, painted furniture, china collections, vintage linens, pretty teacups and lots of flowers.

The newer version of this style, often called Grandmillennial, brings those traditional details into a fresher, more modern setting.

It isn’t about making everything look genuinely old. In fact, I think it works best when there is a mixture of old and new.

A floral armchair might sit beside a simple wooden table. Blue-and-white china can be mixed with blush pink roses. A wicker basket can be filled with colorful yarn. Pretty gingham can sit alongside a more traditional floral print.

That mixture is what I wanted to capture in this collection.

For journaling, I think Granny Chic works particularly well because there are so many little details to play with. You can use a large floral page as a background, then add a tiny teacup, a bow, an embroidered picture or a little basket as a fussy cut. A simple word strip can become the finishing touch.

And because there isn’t one “right” way to use any of it, you can make your pages as full or as simple as you like.

The Granny Chic Junk Journal Folio

I started the collection with the Granny Chic Junk Journal Folio, because I wanted a pretty little place to keep all those bits and pieces you might collect while crafting and journaling.

The folio has a pretty floral and gingham interior, pockets for storing little paper treasures, and a few optional elements that you can mix and match depending on how you want to use it.

You could use it to hold tags, journaling cards, notes and ephemera, or make it into a little home for a miniature journal (my favorite thing to do!). You could even use it as a keepsake folio for a particular project, holiday, creative hobby or collection of memories.

And the folio can be used on its own, or tucked inside a larger journal.

A few ways to use the folio

I love the idea of filling the pockets with little pieces rather than deciding everything has to be attached permanently.

Try adding:

• handwritten notes
• little journaling cards
• photos
• tickets or paper souvenirs
• fabric or ribbon scraps
• word strips
• fussy-cut flowers
• small tags
• snippets of pretty paper
• quotes or little memories

You could also make a mini journal to tuck inside the folio, with little pages for recording memories, ideas, quotes, or little reflections.

That would be such a lovely little slow-journaling project.

Granny Chic Journaling Words & Phrases

Next are the Granny Chic Journaling Words & Phrases, which include 32 different words and phrases in four coordinating colors, along with 13 bonus fussy cuts.

This is probably one of my favorite sorts of printables to use because these little pieces can completely change a page without requiring much work.

The words include phrases such as A Life Well Loved, Little Daily Joys, Handmade With Care, Collected Over Time, Sunday Afternoon, Simple Pleasures and Where Memories Bloom.

They are deliberately a little open-ended, so they don’t tell you exactly what your page has to be about.

You might use Sunday Afternoon on a page about a quiet weekend, or Handmade With Care alongside a photo of something you’ve made. Collected Over Time could work beautifully with a page about treasured possessions, while Little Daily Joys could become a heading for an ordinary day.

And sometimes you don’t need a particular reason at all. You can simply choose the phrase that looks right!

The four colors – sage green, blush pink, dusty blue and warm ivory – make it easy to coordinate them with the rest of the collection.

And then there are the fussy cuts…

The 13 bonus Granny Chic fussy cuts include things like floral baskets, bows, embroidered pieces, wicker furniture, teacups, teapots, china and other little decorative details.

These are great for adding that extra layer to a page.

For example, you could put a floral basket into the corner of a page, add a little bow to a photo, or layer a teacup over a patterned piece of paper.

I particularly like using fussy cuts when a page feels like it is missing something, but I don’t necessarily want to add another large piece. A tiny illustration can be just enough.

Granny Chic Junk Journal Pages – Volume 1

The first volume of Granny Chic junk journal pages includes six double-page spreads, with a mixture of floral designs, cozy interiors, craft details, china, baskets and pretty little vignettes.

There is lots of space within the pages to add your own photos, writing and ephemera, while some areas are more decorative and can simply be enjoyed as they are.

I wanted these pages to feel like little glimpses into a home rather than just collections of decorative flowers.

You’ll find things like craft supplies, pretty china, floral arrangements, wicker baskets and cozy corners throughout the pages. They have that slightly nostalgic feeling that I love, but the colors and illustrations keep them feeling fresh rather than overly vintage.

Some ideas for using the pages

You could use a floral page as the background for a memory from your own home, then add a photograph and a few handwritten lines.

A page featuring china could become a place to record a favorite recipe, a special afternoon tea or a memory associated with a particular piece of crockery.

A craft-room scene would be lovely for recording a project you’re working on, a new craft you’ve tried or simply a list of things you’d like to make.

And, of course, you don’t have to write much at all.

A photo, a date, a word strip and a few little fussy cuts can be enough to make a page feel finished.

Granny Chic Junk Journal Pages – Volume 2

Granny Chic Pages Volume 2 is designed to work beautifully alongside the first set, but the pages have their own scenes and arrangements, so they don’t feel like duplicates.

There are more cozy interiors, floral arrangements, embroidery, wicker furniture, shelves, pretty china and craft-room details, along with softer areas where you can add your own journaling.

I actually really like having two volumes because it gives you much more freedom when putting a journal together.

You can mix pages from both sets rather than having to use them in order. Cut one of the pages down to make a smaller journaling card, use part of an illustration as a tuck spot, or cut around a decorative section and layer it onto another page.

You can also print the pages more than once and use them differently each time. I often reduce the print size to about 70% to make a mini journal that fits right inside the folio.

That’s one of the things I like most about printable junk journal pages. They aren’t precious in the same way a beautiful piece of original paper might be. You can cut them up, fold them, layer them, distress the edges, turn them into pockets or use just one small part of the design.

Mix and Match the Whole Collection

The really fun part, for me, is using all of the pieces together.

You could start with one of the printable journal pages and add a word strip as a little heading. Then cut out a floral basket or teacup and layer it with a photo.

Or perhaps use a piece of the page as a pocket and fill it with tiny journaling cards.

The Granny Chic folio can hold some of these smaller pieces, while the word strips and fussy cuts can travel between different pages and projects.

And don’t feel that everything has to match perfectly.

Although the collection has a coordinated palette of dusty blue, blush pink, sage green, warm cream and soft floral colors, I think Granny Chic looks better when things feel a little collected. You can mix patterns, overlap pieces and let some things sit slightly crooked.

In fact, that’s part of the charm!

Why I Love This Kind of Journaling

I think I’ve been drawn more and more towards this kind of slow, creative journaling because it feels very different from the pressure we can sometimes put on ourselves to be productive.

There is something really lovely about sitting down with a pile of paper, scissors, glue and a cup of tea and simply deciding what looks pretty together.

You don’t have to write three pages, or document something important. You don’t even have to know what the finished page is going to look like. Just start with a little piece of floral paper and see where it takes you.

Maybe you’ll add a photograph or find an old receipt in a drawer and tuck it into a pocket. Maybe you’ll write down something small that happened that day. Or perhaps you’ll spend twenty minutes arranging tiny pieces of paper and not write anything at all.

That still counts.

For me, that’s where the mindful part of junk journaling comes in. It gives me a reason to slow down and pay attention to little things – colors, textures, patterns, memories and the things I might otherwise overlook.

And Granny Chic seems particularly suited to that!

It is all about little daily joys, things collected over time, handmade details, flowers, home and memories. Which are, coincidentally, some of my favourite things to put into a journal.

Create Your Own Little Granny Chic World

The whole collection is really an invitation to make something that feels like your own little corner of the world.

You can make it very floral and feminine, fill it with craft-room details, keep it mostly neutral with a few pretty accents, or mix everything together.

There are no rules about what a Granny Chic journal should look like.

Use the folio as a little paper home, the journal pages as your backgrounds, the word strips to add meaning, and the fussy cuts to add those tiny details that make a page feel personal.

Then add your own photographs, memories, scraps, handwriting and treasures.

That’s the bit that makes it yours.

And honestly, I think that’s why I love junk journaling so much. The printable pieces might give you the starting point, but it’s all the little things you add afterwards that turn a collection of pretty papers into something that actually tells your story.
